Great-grandmother of first lady Laura Bush (Laura Lane Welch).

Research Notes

She may have been born in Virginia (according to the 1880 census), but other censuses say Tennessee so that is probably correct. Her parents were born in Virginia.
According to the 1900 census, Emily had borne 7 children, only 3 of whom were still living in 1900.

Most evidence shows that Emily was a Holloway and was the sister of Andrew, Richard, and James Holloway of Dunklin Co., Missouri. But two of her children were listed with the surname Boling in the 1870 census. Some have speculated that her maiden name may possibly have been Boling or Bolling, or that her marriage to Doctor C. Lane was her second marriage and that her first marriage was to a Mr. Boling. The two boys, Samuel Boling and D.R. Boling, ages 16 and 14, were living with D.C. Lane and his wife Emily J. in the 1870 census. They appear two be the same two boys who were listed as Samuel Lane and Doctor J. Lane, ages 6 and 4, in the 1860 census. The "Boling" connection hasn't yet been solved.

From the following census records, it appears that Emily Jane understated her age in 1860 and 1870, but gave more accurate answers in 1880 and 1900.

"Jane Holloway" age 14 in 1850 Census, Dunklin County, Missouri:
HANDLEY, Elizabeth; age 57; Farmer; b. Va.;
HOLLOWAY, Andrew; age 18; Farmer; b. Tenn.;
HOLLOWAY, Richard; age 16; Farmer; b. Tenn.;
HOLLOWAY, Jane; age 14; b. Tenn.;
(next household):
HOLLOWAY, James; age 30; male; Farmer; b. Va.;
HOLLOWAY, Minna?; age 32; female; b. Tenn.;
HOLLOWAY, Cicero; age 6; b. Illinois.;
HOLLOWAY, John; age 4; b. Illinois;
HOLLOWAY, George; age 2; b. Mo.;
HOLLOWAY, Mary; age 1; b. Mo.

Censuses from 1870 onward show Emily Jane as the wife of Doctor Chapman Lane, but he (D.C. Lane) hasn't been located in the 1860 census. However, the following shows a "Simon Lane" the same age that D.C. Lane would have been in 1860, with what looks like the same wife (Emily) and same two children (Samuel and Doctor J./D.R) who later appear in D.C. Lane's household in 1870 -- except that Samuel and Doctor J./D.R. are listed with the surname LANE in 1860, but BOLING in 1870. But the birth locations and ages are the same. Also in the "Simon Lane" household in 1860 is Mary Lane, 17, who was probably D.C. Lane's sister as shown in the 1850 census. Question: was "Simon" the same person as Doctor Chapman Lane? Or was Simon perhaps a brother of Doctor? Another question: was Emily married first to a BOLING, then to LANE? (Why were two of her children listed with the surname BOLING in 1870)?

"Emily Lane" age 21 in 1860 Census, Dunklin County, Missouri:
Simon LANE; age 30; male; Farmer; b. Tenn.;
Emily LANE; age 21; female; b. Tenn.;
Samuel LANE; age 6; male; b. Mo.;
Doctor J. LANE; age 4; male; b. Mo.;
P.S. LANE; age 7months; male; b. Mo.;
Mary LANE; age 17; female; b. Tenn.;
S.R. BROWN; age 23; male; Schoolteacher; b. Tenn.;
J.B. EVANS; age 26; male; b. Ky.
