Biography

James Holloway was born about 1700 in Essex County, Virginia. He was the son of John Holloway and Rachel Unknown Holloway.

Sometime between 1710-1720, James' father surveyed 250 acres of land on Massaponax Creek. That land was in Essex Co. when surveyed but became part of Spotsylvania Co. in 1721. Based on the court records from Spotsylvania Co. James probably lived there into the 1730's. We suspect James' father moved into the area of Caroline Co. sometime before 1737 and it appears likely that James bounced back and forth between Spotsylvania and Caroline Co. until his father died in 1742.

James married Judith Booker sometime before 1762, when James would have been about 60 years old. However, this may have been a second marriage for James. Since everything reported about Judith's history points to her residence in Amelia Co. it seems unlikely for James to have married her before he moved to Amelia Co. c1742-43. Also, evidence of a James and John Holloway residing in Amelia Co. at the same time, suggest that they could be sons of James by a first marriage. And that may mean that the son, Archer, and daughters Ashby and Elizabeth named in James will of 1778 may be children from his second marriage to Judith. Much more research will be needed to confirm all of that.

By 1743 we find James in Amelia County, Virginia. Tithe records there demonstrate James was a resident at least through 1749. In 1746, he was recorded on the tithe lists of Robert Hudgens, and a second James Holloway was also listed on the list of John Hudgens. The second James may be a son, and the John Holloway found on these same lists may be another son. Both Robert and John Hudgens were neighbors of James when he moved to Cumberland Co. c1749. And another name on these lists, Elias Downs, was an adjoining neighbor back in Spotsylvania Co.

In December 1748, James purchased 400 acres of land on the head of Muddy Creek in Cumberland Co. He remained there until 1762, when he sold his land and moved to Lunenburg Co.

James purchased 262 acres on or near Mitchell's Creek and Meherrin River in 1762. That land was probably just about on top of today's boundary between Lunenburg and Mecklenburg Co. and in fell into the newly formed Mecklenburg Co. in 1765.

James remained there until his death in 1778.

About the Map

The attached plat map shows the 400 acres purchased by James Holloway in 1748, in what is now Cumberland County, Virginia. Holloway's tract is shown in brown and was just east of the land owned by his brother, John Holloway. The red line running through the tract is today's Highway 45. The land is located near today's Ashby, VA. This is the same land Holloway sold before moving to Lunenburg Co. c1762.
