Biography

Drucilla was born in Cumberland County, Virginia, as that is where her parents lived at the time. Her exact date of birth is unknown. She was still a minor under the age of 21 when her father died in 1755. [1] Her parents were John Holloway Jr and Elizabeth Robertson [2]

Sometime after her father's death, Drucilla's mother married Daniel Hogan. [3]

Daniel Hogan was appointed as guardian of the three Holloway children, acting as such as early as 1760 when he entered an account of their funds in August court. [4] He made return on the sisters account to the court in 1762, [5], 1763 [6] and 1764. [7]

Drucilla next appears in the court records in 1766 when her uncle Hezekiah Robinson was appointed her guardian. [8] Drucilla was still a minor and under the care of a guardian in 1767 [9] and 1768 [10]

Sometime prior to November 1771, Drucilla married Hughes Flannaken and moved with her new husband to Bedford County. [11]

The will of John Holloway Sr left land and a slave to his three granddaughters, to be divided in thee equal shares when they reached the age of 18 years. Sarah Holloway turned 18 sometime in the year 1771. She married her guardian, Daniel Saunders, by 25 November 1771. Since Drucilla and Phebe were already married by this time, they along with their husbands Hughes Flannaken and Jeremiah Puckett sued for division of their estate. [11] The decree of the court ordered the land to be plotted into three equal portions, one for each heir, and the slave to be sold with proceeds split equally. [12] The plat included in the case file is only for 273 acres, with each heir receiving 91 acres. There is no reference as to what happened to the remaining 2 acres. An image of the plat can be seen here. [13]

Research Notes

Drucilla was a young child when her father died in 1755. She was still a minor in 1768. Her birth date is still an estimate. She could have been born anytime between 1748-1753. A marriage record for Drucilla has not yet been located. Bedford County still needs to be searched for census, deeds, and other records for Drucilla and Hughes Flannaken.

Still unable to find an actual document appointing Daniel Hogan as guardian of the three Holloway daughters, although there are records that he did act as such.

Holloway-3330 and Holloway-455 appear to represent the same person because: John Holloway Sr had no daughter named Drucilla. His granddaughter Drucilla (Holloway-455) has an exiting profile. Parents have been corrected. Please merge this profile (Holloway-3330) into the lower number.
Will of John Holloway Sr of Southam Parish, Cumberland County Virginia Will Book 1, p 153-154, FHL film 30738, dated 13 December 1757, probated 24 July 1758, names only four sons, six daughters, and four grandchildren. The daughters were Phebe, Elizabeth, Mary, Jane, Agness, and Martha. There was however a granddaughter named Drucilla. She was the daughter of John Holloway Jr. and Elizabeth Robinson. Drucilla's father was deceased, hence the reason she and her sisters were provided for in their grandfather's will. That Drucilla Holloway already has a profile Holloway-455.
