Biography

John Hollyman is the grandson of Christopher Hollyman, who died in 1691, in the Isle of Wight county, Virginia. [1] John's father was Christopher Charles Hollyman aka Holleman and his mother, Susannah Vasser. In 1723, in Isle of Wight county, Virginia, John married Elizabeth Moody, born 1702, in Isle of Wight county. [2]

Researchers Notes

As George A. Holleman explains in his book (see link) the surname of this family changed with each succeeding generation. The DAR records for his son, Jesse, and those of any other Holliman, Hollaman, or Holleman are found under the spelling of the surname as "Holman" with the disclaimer, "As such, the DAR assigns a single standard surname that covers variant spellings of similar surnames. While the surname may appear incorrect, this does not mean it is in error. This spelling system ensures that patriots are not established under more than one spelling." [3]
