Biography

Mary was born in 1791. She was the daughter of Lewis Holmes[1] and Grace Cooper of Sampson County. She was also the niece of Governor Gabrial Holmes. Fleet Cooper names her and her mother in his will. Mary and Stephen sold land in Sampson County as the heirs of Lewis Holmes[1]. She was also mentioned in her grandfather's will. Mary died before 1850, as she is not in the census - anywhere. She is buried in the Herrington Cemetery in DeSoto County, MS.

Research Notes

Her findagrave memorial is wrong[2]

Two stories persist about Mary Herrington wife of Stephen. One says she remarried, to Andrew Kilpatrick and moved to Alabama. There is no proof of that and census records show that the Mary married to Andrew Kilpatrick was born in South Carolina and her parents were born in Ireland. Not one source has ever been provided because there is none. She is never found in any record after the 1840 census. Not one. Not anywhere. If someone has documentation of Mary Herrington - widow of Stephen Herrington - after that time, please share it. She has also been confused with Mary Herrington , the wife of William Herrington and mother of Cleva Herrington.
