Biography

Robert Holmes was a naval officer and fought in the Second and Third Anglo-Dutch wars. Later Governor of the Isle of Wight, where he is buried. Had an illegitimate daughter Mary, with Grace Hooke. He was born in 1622 of English parents.

Robert Holmes was an Admiral in the Royal Navy and later Govenor of the Isle of Wight. His extensive biography is covered by Wikipedia[1].

He had an illegitimate daughter Mary Holmes by Grace Hooke. This is acknowledged in the Dictionary of National Biography Volume 9 (OUP: 1921-22). Mary Holmes was born in 1678, the same year that Grace's father John Hooke died in Newport by committing suicide.

Robert Holmes died at Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight, England in 1692. His house became the The George Hotel which remains standing in 2021. It is located close to Yarmouth Castle. In his Will, he makes extensive mention of Mary and tries to ensure that she will be included in the family by requesting Henry Holmes, the son of Robert's elder brother, to marry Mary.
