Biography

Annor (or Anna as she was also known) Holmes was born in November 1751 in Windham County (most-likely in Ashford - research needed), Connecticut. Holmes was an old Connecticut pioneer name and at least one 19th Century politician, Uriel Homes Jr., from Hartford, served in the US Congress in 1818-19. [1]

On November 11, 1771, just after her 20th birthday, Anna Holmes married James A. Snow, b: January 11, 1749, in Ashford, Windham Co., Connecticut. They married in Ashford CT and had at least 8 children there from 1773-1791:[2]

After America's victory in the War of 1812, James Snow and his wife joined a movement of Connecticut residents who left New England to settle that state's "Western Reserve" territory, now part of the new (1803) American state of Ohio. The Connecticut Land Company, formed in 1795, had bought 12,000 sq. kilometers (3 million acres) of land in the "Western Reserve;" one of its wealthy founders was Connecticut politician, Uriah Holmes, possibly a relation of Anna (Holmes) Snow (unproven).[3]

Even though Ohio was an independent state, its N-E corner was settled primarily by former Connecticut residents. A large township in Portage County was called successively: Strongburg (after original land-owner Caleb Strong), Sharon, and then Windham, after Windham, Connecticut, due to so many new settlers from just where James and Anna (Holmes) Snow's family came from. Windham, Portage County, Ohio, is where James & Anna (Holmes) Snow established their farm (exact date unknown but before 1823).[4]

Life on the frontier was not easy and hard-working Anna (Annor) Holmes Snow unfortunately succumbed in Windham, Ohio, on March 28, 1823. She was 71 years old. Her husband, James A. Snow, survived her passing for an additional 7 years. He died on February 11, 1829, at the Snow farm, Windham Township, Portage County, Ohio, USA at 80 years old. The two are buried together at the Windham Cemetery, Windham, Portage, Ohio, USA. [5]
