From Find a Grave:
It is thought William Holmes died (10 Jan 1841) and was buried in Peacham (as was son Caleb). Thirty years later his wife Lydia Adams 28853044 died and was buried in Sutton (as was their son Lewis some years later), along the way the expensive spire memorial was placed in Sutton.
Then along comes 1919 and the Vt legislature's rule that the town clerks must provide vital records to the state, including deaths over the previous years. The subsequent records provided by the town clerks and Sutton and Peacham on their index cards are in reality inventory of town grave stones in their cemeteries. Subsequently we have William's death "recorded" in both towns.
We believe William was buried in Peacham at his death, his wife Lydia was buried in Sutton at her death with spire listing her and husband. It is unlikely that 30 years after his death William could have been dug up and moved to Sutton from Peacham.
Our current thinking is that:
William in Sutton is a cenotaph.
William was and is buried in Peacham.
