Comments from Judi Burkhardt via email Jun 2016:

In a book titled 1833 Citizens of Athens County, Ohio (Report to the 23rd Congress Doc. No. 468), there was mention of only one Holmes/Holms/Homes in the index, that of James Holmes. I suspect he is the same James Holmes on the 1850 census below. There are several Johnson’s and one John Johnston also in the index.

In trying to find more information on Madison Holmes and Decatur Holmes below on the 1850 Athens Co., OH. census, the only one I found anything on so far is Decatur Holmes, born 7 Jan 1817 VA. and he died 10 Mar 1910 Coffey Co., KS. His parents were Richard Holmes, born ca. 1780 Scotland and Nancy Cameron, born ca. 1785 Ohio and died in Waterloo Twp., Athens Co., OH. Note Madison below named a child Cameron. This would lead me to think his mother was Nancy Cameron and that he and Decatur were brothers and this is surely the Nancy in Madison’s household on the 1860 census. I am now wondering if the James Holmes below with wife Nancy in household was named James Richard or Richard James and he went by James. They were good at this back then to switch between given name and middle name, so we surely are looking at James and Nancy as the parents of Madison, Decatur and most likely Richard Imes wife Jane Holmes, although one source I found on Ancestry says her parents were Gov. Gabriel Holmes, Jr., b. 1769 Sampson Co., NC – d. 1829 NC and Mary Smith Hunter. Jane born 1805 NC and d. 1896 Athens Co., OH. and gives her husband as Richard Imes. If Jane truly was born in NC, then she cannot be the Jane on the 1850 Athens Co., OH. census or the person who gave the census taker the info. is in error. If this is the correct Jane who married Richard Imes and her father died in 1826 NC, how did she get to Athens Co., rarely did woman travel alone? Normally the marriage of the female takes place where the bride lives. Since she and husband Richard Imes live close to James & Nancy Holmes and Decatur and Madison, then possibly she went to live with this James Holmes and wife James being a close relative before migrating to Ohio. These Holmes in Waterloo Twp. seems to be the most prominent in Athens Co., so they just might be connected to your Louisa who also lived in Waterloo Twp., along with the other names on the 1850 census.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with James by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with James:
