Jacob Holmes is a DAR Patriot Ancestor, A211800.
1776 Project
Jacob Holmes performed Patriotic Service in Pennsylvania in the American Revolution.

Jacob was born Dec 8, 1768 in Rockingham County ,Virginia. He moved to what eventually became Brooke County, West Virginia (but at the time, was likely Ohio County, Virginia, and later Brooke County, Virginia, and still later became part of West Virginia) and he settled on Buffalo Creek, not far from the Ohio river.

In 1790 he married Elizabeth Doddridge Huff, in a boat in the middle of the Ohio river. Shortly after he was employed by the United States Government as an Indian scout.

For his services as a scout he received a tract of land on Short Creek. He resided on the farm some twenty-five years and moved to Fairfield township, Highland county. In the spring of 1839 he bought a farm two miles north of Kenton, Hardin County, Ohio. There stands a fine old brick residence surrounded by a fertile and beautiful farm, where he spent his last days. [1]

Death: Oct. 14, 1841

Biographical Sketch

Text from: Historical collections of Harrison County : in the state of Ohio..., published in 1900.

Jacob Holmes was born December 8, 1768, in Rockingham county, Va. While Jacob was a small boy, his father moved to Bedford county, Pa., and a few years later to Washington county. Pa., near Catfish, now Washington; then a few years later to what is now Brooke county, W. Va., and settled on Buffalo creek, not far from the Ohio river. Here our subject grew to manhood, and in 1791 was married to Elizabeth, daughter of Michael and Hannah Doddridge Huff. Shortly after his marriage he was employed by the United States Government as an Indian scout, and, in company with his brother-in-law, Kinsey Dickerson, and a man named Washburn, was thus employed for three years. For his services he received a tract of land on Short creek, a few miles north of where Mt. Pleasant now stands. To this place he moved his family in the spring of 1796, my mother being but six months old. He resided on this farm some twenty-five years, when he sold to a man named Comley, and removed to the northern part of Harrison county. The farm on which he then located is now in Carroll county. He resided here until 1832, when he again sold out and removed to Fairfield township, Highland county. In the summer of 1838, he again sold out, and bought a farm one mile north of Kenton, Hardin county, to which he moved in the spring of 1839, and there he died October 14, 1841.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Jacob by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Jacob:
