Biography

Elizabeth Holmes was born circa 1818 (aged 76 when she died in 1894[1]).

Elizabeth was the daughter of George Arbuthnot Holmes of Moorock, King's Co, Ireland,[2] and his wife, Jane.[1] Elizabeth's mother was Jane Moore.

Elizabeth was her parents' third daughter,[2] sister of:

  1. Frances Holmes, died 14 November, 1886, who married J T Armstrong, Esq;[1]

On 11 August, 1842, Elizabeth married George Montgomery, son of Alexander Nixon-Montgomery of Beaumount Park, Tyholland, Co Monaghan, Ireland, and his wife, Eliza Stanley.[2]

Elizabeth and George had children:[2]

  1. Alexander Nixon Montgomery, FRCPI, of Dublin, born 1 May, 1847, married on 15 September, 1885, Anna Sophia Adams. Anna was the third daughter of Benjamin Samuel Adams, of Shinan House, Co Cavan, and his first wife, Georgina Charlotte, daughter of Reverend George Hickson, Vicar of Magheracloone, diocese of Clogher;
  2. Jeannie Holmes Montgomery, died 13 June 1876, married on 17 September, 1873, Benjamin Samuel Adams, of Shinan House, JP, High Sheriff of Co Cavan in 1866, Lieut 12th Regiment, died 13 June, 1876, son of Anne Jane Foster and her husband, Captain Charles James Adams, RN, JP, of Shinan House; Jeannie, his second wife, through this marriage became the step-mother of her sister-in-law, Anna Sophia, and her brother's mother-in-law!
  3. Elizabeth Stanley Montgomery; and
  4. Mary Montgomery.

In 1851, when the United Kingdom Census was taken on the night of 30 March, the residents of 16 Monteith Row, Glasgow, St James Civil Parish, Lanarkshire, Scotland, all born in Ireland, were:[3]

  1. George Montgomery, head of house, aged 35, LRCSI Not Practicing;
  2. Elizabeth Montgomery, George's wife, aged 32;
  3. Jane H Montgomery, George's daughter, aged 6;
  4. Alexander N Montgomery, George's son, aged 3;
  5. Eliza L Montgomery, George's daughter, aged 8 months; and
  6. Eliza Foster, George's house servant, aged 28.

Elizabeth's husband, George Montgomery, MD, died on 4 November 1869, aged 54.[1]

Elizabeth Montgomery, widow, died in her home at 45 Upper Sackville Street, Dublin, on 21 December, 1894.[4] Probate of Elizabeth's will was granted at Dublin on 26 September, 1895, to Alexander Nixon Montgomery of 45 Upper Sackville Street, Physician and Surgeon (Effects £21 5s 1d).[4]

Elizabeth and her husband, George, were buried with her parents, Jane and George Arbuthnot Holmes, and her sister, Frances Armstrong, in Mount Jerome Cemetery, Dublin, where their headstone is inscribed:[1]
