William Coulter Holstein was born on 28 Jan 1872 in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania, United States, son of Alexander C. Holstein (1849–1920) and Eleanor Eliza (Rosensteel) Holstein (1854–1944).
His siblings were:

- Sarah Belle (Holstein) Hensleigh (~1880–~1968)
William died on 3 Mar 1953 in Baltimore, Maryland, United States, aged 81.[1] He was buried in Oakland Cemetery and Mausoleum, Indiana, Pennsylvania.

Son of Alex A. and Eleanor E. Rosensteel Holstein his wife, Sarah Belle McCreight Holstein died in 1929 was survived by sons and daughters, A. Mac and William C. both of Indiana; Janet wife of Charles Brashear, Balt. MD; Marie, wife of Dwight Starr, Homer City; Helen wife of Allen Thompson, Salisbury, MD and Nell wife of Robert Kime of Philadelphia; brothers and sisters, Earl and Hamilton Holstein and Mrs. Maude Patterson of West Lebanon and Mrs. Sadie Hensleigh of Patchogue, Long Island, NY One daughter, Olive, wife of Ross Rowe died in 1937.
