Thomas "Jeff" Jefferson Holt Sr was born on June 7, 1894 in Alix Township, Franklin County, Arkansas. His father was William Ambrose Holt, and his mother was Mary Ellender Stutzman.[1]
In 1910, he lived in Alix Township, Franklin County, Arkansas. At age 15, he worked as a farm laborer on the family farm. His father had passed a few years before, so it was just him, his mother and his siblings. His sister living in the home had two children from a marriage living with them.[2]
In 1917, Jeff still lived in Alix Township with his mother. He worked in the coal mines as a coal miner to earn a living. At age 22, he was short in stature, stout, light colored hair and dark blue eyes.[3]
Jeff married Petsie Crites on December 23, 1917 in Franklin County, Arkansas.[4]
He enlisted in the Army on June 25, 1918 as a private. He was assigned to the 162nd Depot Brigade, Company O, Development Battalion No. 2. This unit was assigned stateside as a training unit to receive and organize recruits. They provided new recruits with uniforms, equipment and additional military training. They also received returning soldiers at the end of the war and completed their out processing and discharge. He was discharged on December 11, 1918.[5][6]
After the war he continued to live in Alix Township. He rented his home and worked in the coal mines as a miner.[7] In 1930, he owned his home in Alix Township, valued at $250. He still worked in the coal mines to earn his living. He did not own a radio set, which was considered a luxury item of the time.[8]
In 1940, he lived in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas. He rented his home and worked as a common laborer to earn a living. He had worked 8 weeks and earned $100.[9] At age 47, he stood 5 feet and 2 inches tall, weighed about 130 pounds, and had a ruddy complexion. He had brown hair and blue eyes. His first finger on his right hand was crooked.[10]
Prior to his death, he lived at 2nd and Spring Street in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas. Jeff died of cerebral arteriosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) on June 22, 1964 in Ozark (Ozark Rest Home), Franklin County, Arkansas.[11] He was buried at Highland Cemetery in Ozark, Franklin County, Arkansas.[12]
