Biography

(From "The life and letters of Gilbert White of Selbourne) "John White, of the Middle Temple, Barrister-at- law and J.P. for Hants, the vicar's only son who lived to maturity, married on September 29th, 1719, at Rogate, Sussex, Anne, daughter and heiress of Mrs. Holt, of East Harting, Sussex, the widow of the Rev. Thomas Holt, Rector of Streatham, Surrey.^[1] Mrs. Holt was daughter and heiress of Benjamin Hyde (or Hide), of Chichester, Esquire, a Russia merchant ; whose father, Benjamin Hyde, in return for some kindness shown to King Charles I. when a prisoner in Carisbrook Castle, received from the King his ribbon of the order of the Garter."
