Biography

Joseph Harrison Holt was born on board the Minerva while the ship was settled in Cork Harbour awaiting the start of the voyage to New South Wales[1]. He was baptised by Reverend Henry Fulton on 19 July and his sponsors were William Alcock, a Mr Harrison and a Mrs Hobbs who had attended the birth.

In December 1812, Joseph left Sydney with his parents on the ship Isabella to return to Ireland. However the ship was wrecked at one of the Falkland Islands, and they did not reach Ireland until 5 April 1814.

The following comes from Pamela Goesch's book 'Looking for Joseph':

Marriage 1: about 1824 to Margaret, and they two children Ester 1825 and Joseph 1827. Margaret died age 27, buried 1 Feb 1830 Monkstown, County Dublin.

Marriage 2: about 1830 to Elizabeth Webster, daughter of Isaac Webster, a gamekeeper, and his wife, Elizabeth nee Franklin.

They had children Joshua 1831-1832, Isaac 1832, Joshua 1834, Mary Elizabeth 1836.

Joseph Harrison Holt and his family are listed in the passenger list of the 'John Jay' which left Liverpool, arriving New York 16 Sep 1836.

On 19 Sep 1837 Joseph Harrison Holt and his family sailed from Liverpool on the 'Superb' which arrived Sydney 25 Jan 1838.

They were living at Pitt Street Sydney when their daughter Elizabeth was born 1 June 1838.

Soon after, they moved to Greendale at Bringelly, on the Nepean River, where he became a tenant farmer of George Wentworth.

Births of children: John 1840, Thomas 1842, William 1844, Mary Emma 1847, Henry James 1850.

On 8 Nov 1848 he was appointed keeper of the public pound at Greendale.

In the 1869-70 electoral roll Joseph Harrison Holt was resident at Winbourne, George Henry Cox's property at Mulgoa.

Death 16 July 1884 at Mulgoa of prostate gland disease and old age, occupation painter.[2]

Death of widow Elizabeth 20 March 1885 age 77 of hepatic disease and old age.
