Biography

When Joseph Holt was born on August 17, 1772, in Wilton, New Hampshire, his father, Joseph, was 26 and his mother, Betty, was 25. He had five sons and two daughters with Tryphena Perry between 1793 and 1810. He died on June 27, 1810, in Landgrove, Vermont, at the age of 45. Joseph Holt was born on August 17, 1772, in Wilton, New Hampshire, to Betty Dale, age 25, and Joseph Holt, age 26.Joseph Holt lived in one of the original American colonies inspired by the successful uprising by a group of fiery Bostonians. His son Joseph P was born on September 28, 1793, in Wilton, New Hampshire. His daughter Tryphena was born on July 5, 1795, in Landgrove, Vermont. His son Simeon was born on March 12, 1800, in Weston, Vermont. His daughter Phebe was born on June 21, 1802, in Vermont. His son Ebenezer was born on June 5, 1804, in Vermont. His son Willard was born on September 22, 1807, in Landgrove, Vermont. His son Grandville was born on April 12, 1810, in Vermont. His wife Tryphena passed away on May 29, 1810, in Landgrove, Vermont, at the age of 38. Joseph Holt died on June 27, 1810, in Landgrove, Vermont, when he was 45 years old.

In about 1796, after the birth of two children, (according to family tradition) the family relocated from Wilton about 60 miles northwest to Weston, a small village in southwestern Windsor County, Vermont. Presumably the other six children were born in or near Weston. In 1810 an epidemic of fever occurred in that area, which took the lives of Typhena and Joseph on 29 May and 27 June while all the children were underage. The place of their death is uncertain, but the probate of the estate is found in the Manchester, Bennington County in southwest Vermont. Mrs. Forne Siefert of Mount Carroll, Illinois, personally examined the probate and found that John Dale Holt, brother of Joseph, was appointed guardian of the minor children in 1810. The appraisers of the estate were Daniel Tuthill, Reuben Holt, and Barrachias Abbot.
