Biography

Frances Elaine "Lannie" Holt was born 2 April 1866 in Madison County Alabama. Lannie was the daughter of Madison Holt and Sarah Margaret Davis. They were both born in Alabama. Lannie's brother, William Henry Holt was born in Marshall County, Alabama in Oct 1868. In 1870 we find Lannie living with her parents and siblings living in Subdivision 44 Twp. 7 Range 3 Marshall County, Alabama.[1] Lannie's father Madison Holt is a farmer. Lannie has two brothers; William, who is now 1 year old and Robert Holt who was born in May of 1870 and is one month old. Thomas Davis, 18 years old is living with the family as Farm Labor. It is now June of 1880 and Lannie's family has grown in the last ten years.[2] Lannie is 13 years old. Her mother Sarah is 38 years old, is now the Head of Household and she needs all the help she can get to keep up with the farm. William is 11 years old, Robert is 10 years old, Mary, born in 1871, is 9 years old, Rachael, born in 1872 is 8 years old, A.P., who was born in 1873 is 7 years old, Killis, was born in 1875 and is 5 years old. The baby in the family is Sarah, born in 1878 is 2 years old. In 1879 Lannie's father, Madison Holt, passed away. On 4 Feb 1889 Frances "Lannie" Holt married Isaac Joseph Smith in New Hope, Madison County, Alabama. There is no record of their marriage. There is no Federal Census in 1890. The move from Madison County, Alabama to Titus County Texas must have been a long, hard journey. There was railroad service between Alabama and Texas in that time period and it is possible that the family took the train to make the move.

1880 U.S. Rail Service

In 1900 Lannie is 30 years old. Francis and "Joe" Smith have moved away from Alabama and are living in Justice Precinct 4, Titus County, Texas.[3] Lannie and Joe have two children, Isaac D. "Bud" Smith was born 9 Nov 1890 and Katie D. was born 8 Feb 1892. Bud is now 10 years old and Katie is 9 years old. This Census year is very important to the family for historical reasons. Isaac David Smith, now 84 years old and his wife Nancy (Brooks) Smith are living on the farm next to Francis and her family. Isaac David Smith passed away in Texas before 1910. Nancy (Brooks) Smith passed away in 1902 in Omaha, Morris County, Texas. In 1905 Lannie's brother, William Henry Holt, passed away in Paint Rock, Marshall County, Alabama. In 1910 Frances and Joe are living in Bokoshe Twp., Leflore County, Oklahoma.[4] Joe is still farming. Bud Smith is now 18 years old, his sister Katie is 17 years old, Robert Samuel is 15 years old and Elsie O. Smith born 1902 in Omaha, Morris County, Texas is 8 years old. They are living next door to Joe's brother Samuel Morris Smith.[5] Four years later on 12 Mar 1914 Frances Elaine "Lannie" (Holt) Smith passed away in Bokoshe, Leflore County, Oklahoma.[6] She was survived by her husband Joe Smith and their children.
