Biography

George Holt was born in 1818 in Orange County, North Carolina, the son of John Holt and Catherina (Hoffman) Holt.

He married first to Elizabeth Rogers on 27 Feb 1841 in Owensville, Gasconade County, Missouri.^[1] Their children:

1. Russell Holt, (1842–Deceased) not on the 1850 Census
2. John W. Holt, (1843–Deceased) not on the 1850 Census
3. Harvey Washington Holt, (1845–1924)
4. Henry P. Holt, (1847–1864)
5. Mary C Holt, (1850–Deceased)

The 1850 Census^[2] shows him at age 30 with wife Elizabeth and three children in Canaan Township, Gasconade County, Missouri.

Elizabeth died in 1861.

He married second to Mary Gerkin on 30 Jul 1863 in Hermann, Missouri.^[3] Their children:

The 1880 Census^[4] shows him at 63 with wife Mary, age 36, and five children in Third Creek Township, Gasconade County, Missouri. It appears from this census record they he lived next to the Henry and Gesche Gerken family farm, the older brother of his second wife, Mary. We also learn from this record, that the Gerken family, including Mary, are from Hanover, Germany.

Both of his weddings were officiated by his brother-in-law, Rev. Benjamin Leach, Sr. who is married to his sister, Mary Holt, and whose daughter, Permelia Ann Leach, married George and Elizabeth's son Harvey Washington Holt.
