Biography

Obadiah[1] was born in March 1758. He is the son of Isaac Holt and Mary Marble.

668. 1. Obadiah (1570) b. Andover Mar. 23, 1758; m. May 5, 1784, Susannah . . . who d. Apr. 18, 1855. He d. Clinton June 9, 1815, to which place he had removed. He was a private in Capt. Daniel Wilkins's company, and taken prisoner at Fort Cedar, Canada, Nov. 17, 1776. 13 ch.

While Durrie recorded 23 March 1758 as the date of Obadiah's birth, a record from the New Hampshire birth index recorded 26 March 1758.[4]

In 1800, Obadiah Holt and his wife, Susanna, resided in Amherst, Hillsborough, New Hampshire.[7]

In 1810, Obadiah Holt and his wife, Susanna, resided in Clinton, Kennebec, Maine. Listed on the same census page are Caleb Goodwin 2, Jeremiah Goodwin, Miles Goodwin, Caleb Goodwin, and Abiel Holt.[8] At least two of Obadiah and Susanna's children married Goodwins.

1815 - Obadiah died on 9 Jun 1815 and was buried at the Town House Hill Cemetery in Clinton, Kennebec, Maine.[9]

Obadiah's estate was probated in Kennebec County, Maine.[10] Details of his land were included in the petition papers.

Historical insight: On 15 March 1820, the District of Maine (in Massachusetts) became the State of Maine.

In December 1845, Susanna Micels, formerly Holt, applied for the pension of her deceased first husband, Obadiah Holt. Her application included her statement on 18 Dec 1845:[11] [3]

Statement
On the eighteenth day of December A.D. 1845 personally appeared before the District Court of Maine in Open Court, being a court of record, Susanna Micles [sic] a resident of Clinton in the County of Kennebec and State of Maine aged eighty years ... doth on her oath make the following declaration ... that she was formerly the widow of Obadiah Holt who was a soldier in the Revolution, that he was a resident of Amherst, New Hampshire at the time of his service in the Army, that she has reason to believe and does believe that he served for upwards of three years in the Army in the aggregate his service having been at separate times, that immediately after the war ... became acquainted with him and he often spoke his service in the Army and that he served in the whole upwards of three years, that her maiden name was Susanna Jones that she was married to the said Obadiah Holt in Andover, Massachusetts on the fifth day of May in the year seventeen hundred and eighty four, that he died at Clinton in the then District now State of Maine on the ninth day of June A.D. 1815. She further states that after the death of the said Obadiah Hold she remained unmarried until December 8 1816 when she intermarried with George Micles [sic] who went to the State of Ohio and died in the year 1820 since which time she has remained unmarried.

Susanna's son-in-law, Nathan Bracket, also made a supporting statement which documents Susanna and her husband Obadiah's arrival in Clinton about the year 1802:[11] [3]

I Nathan Brackett of Clinton in the County of Kennebec and State of Maine, aged sixty one years do depose and say that I removed into said town in the year 1805 and immediately became acquainted with Obadiah Holt, who I then understood had been a resident of said Clinton upwards of three years ...
