Research Note

Joan A. Hunter wrote an article, "Clarifying John(2) Holton/Houghton of Northampton and Dedham, Massachusetts, and His Wife, Abigail Fisher." The article was published in the New England Historic Genealogical Register, Vol: 159 January 2005. pg. 25-34. [1]

Conflicting information was presented after the unpublished genealogy of William (1) and Mary (______) Holton of Hartford Connecticut, and Northampton, Massachusetts, named Abigail Fisher, daughter of Joshua Fischer, as the wife of John (2) Holton of Northampton and Dedham, Massachusetts. One genealogy spells his name Houghton, another spells it Houlton, and a third spells it Horton. John (2) Holton had been identified as the son of Thomas Horton and wife Mary and married Abigail Fisher, daughter of Daniel. Hunter summarized the confusion into six sources identifying the wife of John Holton as Abigail: 1. The daughter of Joshua Fisher of Dedham, 2. The daughter of Daniel Fischer of Dedham, 3. The daughter of unknown parents, 4.The wife of John Holton of Northampton, 5. The wife of John Houghton/Haughton of Dedham, 6. The wife of John Horton/Houlton of Springfield.

Two Abigail Fishers born in Dedham two years apart

Hunter identified two Abigail Fishers born in Dedham: Abigail Fisher, dau. of Daniel and Abigail Fisher, b. 2 of the 6 mo [1646] (2 Aug 1646); and Abigail Fisher, dau. of Joshua and Mary Fisher, b. 29 of the 12 mo [1646] (29 Feb 1648/9).

Was John Holton of Northampton the Same Man as John Houghton of Dedham?

Summary

Hunter concludes: John (2) Holton, son of William (1) and Mary (_____) Holton, was born about 1641, probably at Hartford, Connecticut, and died at Northampton, Massachusetts, on 14 April 1712. He married at Dedham, Massachusetts, on 1 March 1666/7, Abigail Fisher, who was born there on or about 28 February 1648/9. (Hunter notes that the previous notation of 29 Feb 1648/9 is "likely a clerk's error as it was not a leap year.") She was the daughter of Joshua and Mary Aldis Fisher. She died in or after 1718, perhaps at Northampton or at Northfield, Massachusetts.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with John by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with John:

Holton-566 and Holton-125 appear to represent the same person because: about 1641 is the correct birth according to sources.
