The Ancestry and Descendants of the Nassau-Siegen Immigrants to Virginia 1714-1750 by B. C. Holtsclaw traces many of these families through many generations as far back as the 14th Century using church and guild records.
This group all came from the same area of Germany, Nassau-Siegen, where they worked mostly as miners.
Joseph Jacob Holtzclaw, son of Johann Holtzclaw and Catherine (Russell) Holtzclaw,, was born about 1735 in Virginia.
Joseph married Catherine James (Daughter of John James and Dinah (Allen) James ) about 1761.
When Joseph died in 1786, Caty was appointed guardian of the orphans: Archibald, Betsy, Stephen, Eli, Aggy, Franky and Sally Holtzclaw. Apparently another daughter, Cathy Holtzclaw, was born posthumously. Catherine (Caty) died about 1810 (age 74-75). She provided permission for her youngest daughter Catherine "Caty" to marry Joseph Lawler[1]
See notes on record Elizabeth Holtzclaw, daughter of Johann Holtzclaw and Catherine Russell, for additional information.
