Pat grew up in Herington, Kansas, the son of Nel and Vernon Hood, born January 8, 1908. In the weeks before Pat turned 7 years-old, there was a diphtheria epidemic which killed his younger brother, Willie, December 8, 1914.
During the Holiday season eight years later, Pat was playing with a cap pistol in his coat pocket on his way to St John's Church. He stopped in the park across the road from the church and rinsed his hand in a stream of cool water. He contracted tetanus and died January 16, 1923.
Three siblings survived: a sister (Rose-Mary) and two bothers (Mark and John).
Pat was buried at St Johns Cemetery, Herington, KS
