Biography

John was born in Clackmannan about 1827, the son of James and Ann Hood. James was a Carter and in 1841 he was living with his family at Newtonshaw, Clackmannan. [1]

St Peter.

By 1861 John was a printer's pressman living in Leeds in Yorkshire at a lodging house run by widow, Sarah Hurd. [2] John and Sarah were married on 8 September 1863 at St Peter, Leeds. [3] John took her two small sons, Walter and Arthur, under his wing and the boys were known as Walter and Arthur Hood. [4] John and Sarah's firstborn, John Edward, was born in 1862 and was duly vaccinated against smallpox in accordance with the law of 1853. [5] John and Sarah blamed the vaccination for the fact that John was deaf and didn't learn to talk.

By 1881 the Hurd boys had grown up and left home. John and Sarah were living at 4 Lovell St with their four sons. [6]
