Bluford was age 4 and resided with his parents Jacob and Phoebe Hood in Greenup County, Kentucky in 1850.

In the 1860 census he was enumerated as Bluford Hoard age 15. working as a farm hand and residing in the household of Andrew Hoard (sic Hood) in Carter County, Kentucky.[2]

During the Civil War Bluford Hood served in the Union Army as a Pvt Co K, 45th Reg KY Mounted Infantry, 1 Oct 1863, Kentucky and was mustered out 14 February 1865 at Catlettsburg, KY. [3] He received a pension for his service beginning in 1877. [4]

He married Mahala Catherine Salyers on 24 February 1870 in Greenup County, Kentucky. Bluford, age 24, a common laborer, and Catharine, age 19, b KY, were residing in Decatur Twp., Lawrence County, Ohio with their 2 month old daughter Laura in the 1870 US Census. They were living next door to Hezekiah Barker (sic Barber) who was Bluford's half brother. Also living with Hezekiah was Phoeba Barker (sic Barber) who was the mother of Bluford Hood.[5]

Their residence was on 3rd Street in the 2nd Ward, City of Ironton, Ohio in 1880 and included the following:

He was shown as a veteran in the 1890 special census for veterans of the Civil War. [7]

He died 31 July 1896 in Lawrence County, Ohio. His name was misspelled in the death register as Bluephard Hood. [8] He has a military headstone on his grave in the Zoare Cemetery near Ironton, Ohio.[9]
