Dear Cheryl,

The Profile Improvement Project (PIP) is performing a check-in with project members. Please review the following and let us know if you are content where we have placed you or would like to be more involved.

The Project operates in a team structure. There are currently three participant PIP Teams -- The Maintenance Category Team, the Unknowns Team, and the Biography Team. There is also the Voyage Team which guides new Voyagers. See the Profile Improvement Project Teams for a brief outline of each team.

You're currently identified as a member of the Biography Team Level 1. Biography Team Level 1 works on profiles from their watchlist and other profiles that interest them. Biography Team Level 2 works on orphaned profiles from a provided list. Biography Team Level 3 works on notable profiles from the Project’s Maintenance Categories. Are you happy with the Team you are on? If you are interested in working with a different Team, please let us know.

If you have not already done so, we invite you to join the email GoogleGroup. We use the WikiTree Discord server #profile-improvement channel for our project. Neither is required; we also use the Profile_Improvement tag in G2G for Project announcements.

We thank you for all you do to help the Profile Improvement Project meet its goals. We would like to hear about the successes you’ve had and would also appreciate any feedback you have to help improve the Project. Please share your thoughts in a reply to this comment or via private message to one of us.

Hi Cherryl,

Thank you for your commitment to the England Project and its goals in 2023! Together we are making English WikiTree profiles the best they can be!

I'd like to share our end-of-year 2023 Newsletter. You can read it here: England Project Newsletters. We hope you enjoy reading about what we have achieved in 2023!

On behalf of all the England Project Leaders, we wish you a peaceful, productive and enjoyable 2024!

Hi Cherryl,

It is once again time for our annual Ireland Project check-in. Please respond within the next three weeks to let us know:

  1. If you would like to continue as an Ireland Project member. If your answer is yes, please tell us if you are happy with your current team, or if you would prefer to join a different one. If you are currently participating in more than one team we would appreciate you ranking them in their order of importance to you, from highest priority to lowest. This information will be helpful as we consider possible future changes to our team structure.
  2. In the past, the project has had a very minimal membership requirement (one contribution per year) for badged members to meet. Do you believe this is adequate, or should this requirement be increased? What do you believe would be a reasonable commitment to expect from all project members?
  3. How active have you been in the Ireland Project over the past year? Please choose one of the following options: a) I normally spend 1-5 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. b) I normally spend 6-10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. c) I spend over 10 hours per month helping achieve my team’s goals. d) I am not able to contribute every month but have spent approximately ________ hours during the past year improving Irish profiles.
  4. Please provide feedback on any things you’d like to see the project do more of in the future.

You can respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. If we don’t hear from you within the next three weeks we’ll assume your interests have changed or you no longer are able to participate in the Ireland Project at this time, and your badge will be removed. If your circumstances change later you will be welcome to reapply for membership.

Many thanks for all that so many of you have contributed to the project in the past year, and very special thanks to those who answered the project’s call and gave generously of their time to be part of Team Seanchaithe during the most recent connect-a-thon. We are looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Jen. Thanks for making contact and apologies for the slow response. I have been away for a few weeks.

I am still happy with the Dublin team. My grandparents were from there and I periodically return to my family’s Irish ancestors to improve their profiles and conduct more research.

One contribution a year is definitely minimal and I think could easily be increased to 12 a year, averaging one a month. Are there many members only making one contribution a year?

I don’t spend a regular time on Ireland profiles as I am a member of numerous teams, and tend to follow my nose. Sometimes I work on profiles for a team (unconnected, unsourced, unknowns etc) and other times try to refine my existing profiles. I haven’t kept track of my time but would certainly have spent at least 12 hours over the year, if not more.

I am unable to allocate specific times to my WT activity but usually spend a few hours on at least 3 or 4 days a week. I like to participate in the Thons but otherwise tend to work alone.

Many thanks for all you do. Regards Cherryl

Hi Maddy.

Thanks for getting in touch. I am happy to continue with my current teams (Somerset, Dorset and Gloucestershire) but it is difficult to rank them, as I often get side-tracked and end up somewhere quite different from where I started LOL. I am also in the Wales and Ireland Projects, so there is often an overlap as people move about. I am currently working through the suggestions that have come up on my profile, as I was previously too busy following red herrings for a while. I also intend revisiting my family profiles and improving them, hopefully adding more connections. I usually participate in the Connect a Thons and Source a Thons, although I must confess to being a bit of a loner and not engaging too much on Discord or Google. Regards Cherryl

Don’t worry about not engaging on Discord or Google, neither are compulsory, but feel free to drop by and say hello if you are ever in the mood. I think a lot of genealogists spend most of their time working on their own. We usually have a bit of a laugh in the Mighty Oaks channel on Discord during the thons - you are always welcome to come and lurk even if you don’t want to contribute! Anyway, thanks again for all your hard work and for getting back to me and we hope you will continue to enjoy the England Project,

If you wish to remain a member, we would like to learn more about your perception of the Germany Project in order to achieve a future development according to our members needs and wishes. For this, we created a survey, which we kindly ask you to fill-in.

In case you want to communicate, discuss and receive help about WikiTree in German, you might want to check out the WikiTree category at Compgen’s Discourse as well as the German Discord server Ahnenforschung.

Often having problems connecting to the Global Tree and end up adding lots more profiles while trying to get connected, but I guess we all do that. I have also been working in Dorset and Lancashire quite a lot lately.

Hi Debi and Robin.

Thanks for the check-in. Please add me to the GoogleGroup and Discord using the email address [email address removed] as I prefer to keep the WT separate from my personal stuff. I am happy with the team you have assigned me to at the moment. Apart from my own family, I often work on profiles that are unconnected and try to develop their biography and extend their family in an effort to connect them to the tree (not always successfully though!). It really frustrates me to see so many profiles that basically have no useful information or sources, so I frequently start researching them and trying to tease out their stories. It does become a bit obsessive sometimes though! Regards Cherryl

  • What you think the project is doing well, and what (if any) changes you would like to see us make? Are there any teams you would like to become more active in?
  • Would you be interested in helping to work on an Ireland Project newsletter?
  • Please give us some feedback on the use of google group and discord. Do you use one or both of these? If you don’t use either of them, what is the best way for us to ensure you receive project communications? If you would like to join us on either one, just let us know in your response and we will get you signed up.

Please respond to this message by posting a reply below or sending me a private message on WikiTree. Hi Jen

Thanks for the check-in. I have not been very active on any Irish profiles for a while as I have been busy with Wales and England, although I did update my great grandfather and grandfather recently (both born in Dublin). I am a member of the Dublin team and would like to continue in that role, as I hope to do more research in that area soon.

As I explained to the Wales Team a few months ago, I am not much of a team player (not sure why) and don't really interact with the other team members, but tend to dig around until I resolve whatever issues I come across. I like to participate in the Source-a-Thon and Connect-a-Thon and other challenges as they arise, and sometimes use Discord, although I am not good at "chatting" with other team members. A pity really as I can see that it would probably be very beneficial at times. I have just joined the Ireland Discord group and downloaded your new Fact Sheet for the Ireland Project, which is really useful, and will try to engage more in the future. Kind regards and keep up the good work. Cherryl

Unfortunately I am not in a position to take on any additional roles as I cannot commit any more time to my genealogy at the moment. I am always amazed by how much time all of the team leaders must contribute.

Hi Stuart

Thanks for the check-in. I have added and improved many Welsh profiles in the past 6 months, mainly in Glamorgan and Monmouthshire (the teams of which I am a member), plus quite a few in Montgomeryshire, Cardiganshire, Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire. I am happy to remain with these two teams for now, as I am also involved in a number of other projects (England, Ireland and Germany).

Thinking about it, I am not much of a team player (not sure why) and don't really interact with the other team members, but tend to dig around until I resolve whatever issues I come across. I like to participate in the Source-a-Thon and Connect-a-Thon and other challenges as they arise, and sometimes use Discord, although I am not good at "chatting" with other team members. A pity really as I can see that it would probably be very beneficial at times. For example, I often spend huge amounts of time trying to connect profiles which I have created (sometimes in error as they are not who I thought they were!) and end up creating many more unconnected profiles. Having said that, I always make sure that they are properly sourced and usually with a reasonable biography, so I don't feel too bad about it.

Periodically I check in to the project statistics and spend a few hours contributing to various activities such as sourcing or fixing up location names.

I really appreciate the work that the various leaders and coordinators do, as the amount of interaction that can be seen through updates and emails is quite amazing. I honestly don't know how they all find the time to do this and live a normal life. Maybe they don't!!!

Anyway that is all I can think of at the moment, Stuart. Keep up the great work. Kind regards Cherryl

Hi Joan

Thank you for your email. I have now joined a number of Project Teams - England, Wales, Ireland and Germany - because my family came from there and I am often going back to my family tree and trying to improve my profiles. I am also in a number of County Teams - Somerset, Dorset, Glamorgan, Monmouthshire, Dublin, Hessen - and find this is all keeping me fairly busy. The past month or so I have mainly been working in Glamorgan and Somerset, either on my own profiles or working on unsourced profiles. I find it difficult just to add a birth, marriage and death record so usually end up adding in census records, then adding more people to the tree. Unfortunately quite a few of these are unconnected, so that sends me off on another wild goose chase adding in more people and trying to make a connection to the global tree! I find connecting very difficult and frustrating.

I am enjoying the work I am doing and although I am in numerous teams, have very little contact with anyone else. Not sure why. I think I just find it a bit awkward to engage although I read through all the emails and follow up where relevant.

I am happy with my current teams and hope that my profiles are adding good quality sources to the tree overall.

Kind regards Cherryl

Hi Cherryl,

Thank you so much for all your contributions to WikiTree in the last six months, and especially to the Wales Project. It’s been wonderful to have you as part of the team as we work together to increase the quality and quantity of Welsh Profiles.

I have you down as being on the Glamorgan and Monmouthshire Teams. Is this right? How are things going? Do you have any questions? What can we do to support you? Would you like to change any of your teams? Do you want to continue in the Wales Project moving forwards?

I see you’re not currently on the Discord server. You’d be very welcome to join us where we have live text and voice conversations which really helps with collaboration. Just let me know and I can send you an invitation.

I look forward to hearing back from you with all the above.

Thanks once again,

Olivia, Project Coordinator for Wales :-)

Hi Cherryl,

It's that time of the year again: check-in time! As England Project Leaders, we like to check in with you every six months or so to see how things are progressing. Back in May, we didn't ask for a response due to the rapid emergence of Covid-19 because we understood that people's lives were changing rapidly. While we are still living in a Covid world, we do need to hear back from you this time around

First of all, how are you doing? What are you currently working on? Are you happy with the team(s) you're in, or would you like to change things up?

Secondly, we're looking for some feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do you use either or both of these? If you don't use either, why not? Do you have any suggestions on how we can improve participation and collaboration, either generally or for you personally?

Looking forward to hearing from you,

Lizzie, Amy, Joan

England Project Leaders

Hi Lizzie, Amy, Joan

Thanks for the check-in. I love the personal touch from WikiTree and am always amazed by how quickly someone responds regardless of the question! In response to your questions:

First of all, how am I doing? Since completing the Orphan Trail 1 a while ago, I am really enjoying applying my new skills and knowledge to improving entries on WikiTree. I found OT1 excellent and almost think it should be a prerequisite for anyone about to embark on WikiTree as it introduces you to so many things. For example I know in my case that I thought I was fairly good at providing sources before OT1 but have now realised a lot of what I was doing was relatively useless!

What am I currently working on? Following on from my remarks above, I have spent a lot of time improving biographies and sources for my family, many of which I had imported from GEDCOM files. Before OT1 I was frustrated at the need to seek out free sources because I had already done the work and documented it (mainly in Ancestry) but of course I now know that those sources are pretty much gobbledegook in WikiTree. My mind set has now shifted and I see the value in working on one person at a time and finding free sources, fleshing out their biography, then following through with their family members, which i believe is giving a much better and more robust result.

I am initially focusing on my Somerset family and then frequently heading off down rabbit holes as I expand the biographies and add other family members that are not directly of interest to me, but hopefully will be of interest to someone else.

I am also more aware of Unconnected Profiles, Unsourced Profiles and Suggestions (mainly relating to my profiles), although I do get side-tracked with these from time to time, which makes things interesting.

Am I happy with the team(s) I am in, or would I like to change things up? As such I am in the Somerset Team but, apart from the Source-a-Thon, have not had a huge amount of interaction with the team per se. I still have a lot of my profiles in Somerset to improve, so am happy to stay in this team. I also have a lot of family from Wales, Ireland, Australia and my husband's family from Germany, so there may be benefit in joining the England Project equivalent for those places (if there is such a thing). I also have family from Hereford, Middlesex, Dorset, Gloucester, etc. so not sure if there is any value in joining more teams. Must admit, I hadn't really thought about it.

Feedback on the Google Group and our Discord server. Do I use either or both of these? I have signed up for both and receive daily emails through Google (many of which I quickly skim then delete), and check in to Discord every few days. I confess I am more of a lurker than participant, but find some of the threads interesting. Everyone sounds very friendly but I haven't really engaged which is my fault, rather than the service. As I live in Australia, I like the fact that there is almost always someone online from somewhere around the world, which does make things interesting.

If I don't use either, why not? I do use them but not as much as I could. Not sure why - maybe just find it hard to push myself into a conversation somehow!! No easy answer to that one. Also with the Google thing, I am not sure I understand how it works. Is it just the email or am I missing something completely?

Do I have any suggestions on how participation and collaboration can be improved, either generally or for me personally? Not really. I think all the project and team leaders do an amazing job and I frequently wonder how you can make so much time available, assuming that you all lead normal lives as well outside of WT. Genealogy is an obsession for me too, and I spend many hours on WikiTree just trying to improve my family profiles, but cannot imagine how many hours you all put in each week helping other people!!

I have now committed myself to WikiTree as my repository of choice, which has helped my new mindset. I spent years stressing about how I had updated Ancestry but not FindMyPast or FamilySearch and I often became confused or annoyed that I was wasting my time and duplicating effort continually moving from one repository to another. Now I just focus on WT and use the other sites to inform what I am doing, which has simplified things a lot. Consequently I am happy to spend time seeking our free resources and replacing all of my useless Ancestry ones on WT and am taking a lot of pleasure in giving a voice to so many people I never knew, who nonetheless must have led full and interesting lives.

By now you probably wish you had never asked me your questions, so I will stop writing and wish you all well. Thanks for doing a great job. Cherryl

Hi, Cherryl!

Thank you for your participation in October 2020’s Source-a-thon. Your contributions helped us to clear over 57,000 profiles that needed sourcing. This makes our Shared Tree all that much better.

Keep up the great work!

Hi Cherryl

Thank you for joining the Mighty Oaks for the Source-A-Thon (SAT). Congratulations on your work during the SAT. Its an amazing result for the Mighty Oaks, we sourced 8,887. Altogether the teams sourced a total of 57,577 profiles on wikitree. We hope you had fun while building the tree.

We are looking forward to working with you for another Thon soon.

Janet & Joan

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, working with members of the projects which coordinate them is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Sources are very important here on Wikitree, especially on Pre-1700 profiles. It is how we show where we got the info and help others find it too. Find out more about sources here and more detailed info here.

Use the Pre-1700 Projects list to find one which best fits your research focus. Review the project pages for special guidelines and to learn how to collaborate with the project members.

Let me know if you have trouble finding projects which fit your focus. To contact me, log in to WikiTree and go to your profile. Use the ‘Reply’ link below my comment to be sure that I will be notified. You can also click my name to send a private message, or post a comment on my profile page.

Hi Cheryl. Thanks for your comments and I am very impressed how quickly my entry was picked up! I am working on the Orphan Trail at the moment and the pre-1700 profile I edited was the father of my nominated subject. Sorry if I did the wrong thing, but I had some information that I thought proved his existence (the christening of his three children) so thought it would be helpful to add the information and sources to his profile rather than lose them. My current aim is not to pursue research on pre-1700 ancestors (I am not ready for that yet!)

Hi Cherryl,

You have not done anything wrong. I am sorry that you took my message that way. You are doing a great job on WikiTree. I am going through the Orphan Trail also. It is very interesting.

Good luck . . . I know that I need it.

Cheryl ~ WikiTree Greeter

Hi Cherryl, I also found it a bit overwheming at first because it was very different to the other sites I had been using, soon everything seemed to click into place and now I prefer this site to the others, hopefully it will be the same for you.

Anytime you need any help, please let me know

Take care Karen

Hi Cherryl

As you have been a member of WikiTree for a few weeks now I thought I would check in to see how you are getting on with the site.

Has the New Member How-To been helpful or left you with any questions?

I am here to help with any problems or queries you may have. Just click my name, then ask in the comment section of my page or send me a private message.

Sometimes links don't work in emails.  If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile. The links will work from there.

The work is part of being a data doctor. A new calling for me.

You can put both names in the middle name with a comma between. Then put the discussion about them in the biography section.

If we keep the name sections clean then the search engines work better and it is easier to find people and connections.

Happy tree climbing
