Biography

Birth 1806 Walkington

Charles Hood was born in 1806 in Walkington, a village just west of Beverley in East Yorkshire..

Skipsea Brough 1841 Ag Lab

At the first English census in 1841 Charles Hood aged over 30 and his wife Ruth aged over 25 and son Paul just 6 are in Skipsea Brough, just west of Skipsea, close to the North Sea coast of East Yorkshire. Oddly, an older son, James 10 is lodger just a page away with his uncle Paul Pearson ; It seems likely that the solution to this little puzzle lies in Ruth's age : she is unlikely to be the mother of a 10 year old boy, but his stepmother. Worth checking. [1] All YES = Born Yorkshire.

Gransmoor 1851

Charles Hood has moved to another hamlet in 1851, Gransmoor in Burton Agnes parish. Ruth is still with him, and again they have a young child, Mary age 7, [2]

Gransmoor 1861 Private House

Charles and Ruth are still in Gransmoor but apparently in a better house. This time their child with them is 9 year old Charles born in Gransmoor, but there are also a nephew William 7 and niece Eliza age 11 from the Pearson family in Skipsea. [3]

Gransmoor 1871 Hall??

In 1871 Charles and Ruth Hood are still in Gransmoor but almost certainly NOT in the Hall as claimed because there are many households given this indicator. With them are Jane Kirby 63, probably his sister, George Pearson 28 who stays with them and may be Ruth's nephew, and William Russell 10 a scholar from Flamborough. [4]

Labourer 1881 Hill Farm Gransmoor

Charles Hood and George Pearson are still together in Gransmoor, labourers at the 200 acre Hill Farm (Gransmoor is in the plain of Holderness), [5]

Two Widowers 1891 Gransmoor

At Railway Gate House, Gransmoor, near Burton Agnes 1891, James Hood 63 b Skipsea Brough widower, Ag.Lab. is with his father Charles 85 and a cousin George Pearson 49. Some joker has chosen to give Ag.Lab. a modern interpretation "Agricultural and Food Scientist" but of course there was no laboratory, just a crossing gate on a country road which the two elderly labourers were expected to open and close when required as a condition of their occupancy. This was not altogether a bad deal as such cottages were well built and had a big garden where you could grow most of your vegetables, a small flock of chickens and even a pig. [6]

Death 1894 Gransmoor

Charles Hood died in 1894, with an age declaration of 90, almost certainly still in Gransmoor. [7]
