Biography

Adam Hood is born in Canada West, likely in Scarborough Township, on April 16, 1847, the son of William Hood (1805-1887) and Elizabeth Rutherford (1808-1887). Both parents were born in Roxburgshire, Scotland.

In the 1861 census, Adam is 13-years old living with his family on a farm in Scarborough. William Hood owns land on both sides of Steeles Avenue – the land on the north being in Markham, the land on the south side being in Scarborough. In the 1871 census, the 23-year old Adam is living at home (Scarborough) with his parents and he is listed as a “farmer.”

Sometime between 1872 and 1875 Adam marries Isabella Gibson (1848-1912). Isabella grew up on a farm bordering the Hood farm. They have four children:

  • William Hilliard Hood 1877-1941 + (1906) Ida Esther Steele 1876-1958
  • John Rutherford Hood 1882-1917 + Ada Laura Duncan 1883-1963
  • Colin A. Hood 1886>1968 + Hannah Clark (Annabelle) Gibson 1885-?
  • Egerton Gibson Hood 1890-1953 + Florence Alice Buzzell 1892>1957

Adam, Isabella and the children can be found in the census records of 1881, 1891, 1901 and 1911. In the last of these records, Adam is now 64 years old and Isabella is 63. Only one of the children, Colin, is left at home. Although there is some uncertainty about the location of the farm, it appears to be in Lot 5, Concession 5 of Markham, putting it just to the southwest of Hagerman’s Corners. (Information for one of the children indicates he went to the public school in Hagerman’s Corners.) This is five lots northwest of the village of Milliken.

Isabella dies in 1912 and Adam dies on October 7, 1920. They are buried together in the village of Milliken in the St John’s 5th line church cemetery (7155 Warden Avenue).

"William Hood, 1805-87, of Roxburghshire, Scotland, his wife Elizabeth Rutherford, his mother, Agnes Ainslie Hood, and his two sons, William and Walter, settled, in 1831, on lots 31 and 32, conc. 5, Scarborough, where ten more children were born. Daughter Eleanor, b. 1845, recalled carrying her doll and the family frying pan at age five during their move into the new brick residence known as Bellbeck Castle. Later, William Hood retired to another new house built in the Victorian style across Steeles Avenue on part of lot 1, conc. 5, Markham (demolished 1975). In 1839, Mrs. Agnes Hood had bought part of lot 1, conc. 4 for 318 pounds. When her grandson, William, 1827-1909, married Janet Gordon in 1853, they took over this farm, building in 1859 a brick house in the new style with a front gable (demolished 1974). Later, his son, Walter Hood, with daughters Agnes and Elizabeth Hood, kept the Amber Post Office in this house until rural delivery began in 1912-14. Adam Hood, 1847-1920, married Isabella Gibson and farmed lots 3 and 4, conc. 5, where his son Colin, b. 1886, still (1977) lives in the house designed by architect E. G. Lennox and built in 1891-92. The day after Sir John A. Macdonald died, Mr. Hood, as a mark of respect for the Conservative statesman, forbade his builders to work. Thomas Hood, 1851-1906, farmed the Scarborough Hood homestead." [2] The McGill Historical Atlas (c1870s) shows “Wm Hood” as the owner of Lots 32 & 32, Concession V in Scarborough. This would be the farms on the south side of Steeles Avenue between Birchmount Rd and Warden Avenue. The map for Markham shows a “Wm Hood” in Lot 1, Concession IV. This is the northeast corner of Steeles Avenue and Birchmount Rd. The next farm to the east, also in Lo1, Concession IV, is owned by John Gibson.
