Like many patriotic Canadians, he volunteered for service as soon as World War I broke out in August 1914. Severely wounded in August 1918, he spend three years in hospital. After his recovery, he took up teaching at the Ontario Agricultural College in Guelph. He was still there when he died of a cerebral hemorrhage in April 1929, at the age of 44."
