Ellis was born in England on August 11, 1844. His parents were David Hook and Mary Pyman.[1]
He was christened on March 7 1845 at Barnham, Norfolk, England.[2][3]
Ellis arrived in Melbourne Australia in 1852 with his parents and siblings when he was 8 years old.
Ellis Hook married Catherine (Barkla) in 1868 in Victoria[4][5] They had 4 children before she passed away in 1886
Ellis Hook married Christina Ross in 1888 in Victoria[6] Another son was born to Ellis and Christina.
He had been the proprietor of the Queen's Head Hotel in Lockwood, and of a hotel in Swan Hill and was the proprietor of the Crown Hotel in Newstead until his retirement in 1890 when he transferred the licence. He died later that year.
Ellis passed away in 1890[7]
Retirement: Mount Alexander Mail (Vic. : 1854 - 1917) Wed 7 May 1890 - Mr Ellis Hook, proprietor of the Crown Hotel, is about to retire from the hotel business owing to ill health. His success is Mr T. Byrne of Tarnagulla, who will take charge in a fortnight.[8]
Obituary notice: Bendigo Advertiser (Vic. : 1855 - 1918) Fri 31 Oct 1890 - Death of Mr. Ellis Hook.—Mr. Ellis Hook, formerly of Newstead, who at one time kept the Queen's Head Hotel, Lockwood, expired yesterday at his residence, Bullock Creek road, Golden-square. Mr. Hook has been ailing for some time from an affection of the liver, and although he consulted the best medical practitioners yet the disease grew upon him and terminated in his death. Not very long ago the deceased gentleman kept a hotel at Swan Hill, which he sold out of in consequence of his decision to retire from business owing to failing health. Since then he has resided in Sandhurst. The funeral will move from his late residence to the Sandhurst railway station at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning en route for the place of interment, the Newstead cemetery.[9]
Probate notice: Table Talk (Melbourne, Vic. : 1885 - 1939) Fri 12 Dec 1890 - Ellis Hook, formerly of Newstead, hotelkeeper and late of Sandhurst, by his will dated June 4, 1890, and presented for probate by Messrs. Lynch, McDonald, Stillman and Keep, solicitors, appointed William Trudgeon, of Newstead, farmer, and James Barkla, of Donald, farmer, his executors. He bequeathed the whole of the property known as the Crown Hotel, at Newstead, together with all amounts accruing therefrom, to his wife, Christina Hook, during her life, and on her death to his son, James Murray Hook, absolutely. The residue of his estate is left to his three children, Frederick John, Charles John and Catherine, in equal shares. The testator died on October 30, 1890, and his will was sworn at £760 real and £2283 personal. Total, £3043.
Ellis was buried in the Newstead Cemetery on November 1, 1890[10]
