Charles was a Sargent in the instructional staff of the Scottish Rifles for 9 years before enlisting in the 1st Battalion of Australian Imperial Force for overseas service on 19 Feb 1917 He reached the rank of Sergeant Major and was wounded in action on 16.3.1918 from a mustard gas shell explosion and transferred to Bath War Hospital England suffering gas poisoning. He was discharged from the Army on 17 April 1919 and returned to Australia. Although he lived till 1963 and sired five children. There is some evidence that he suffered from the gas war wounds for the rest of his life spending some time in convalescence in La Perouse Veterans Hospital.
