Robert was born prior to July 9, 1833 when he was baptised in All Saints Church, Besthorpe, Norfolk, England. He was the eldest son of David Hook and Mary Pyman.[1]

Robert arrived in Melbourne aboard the ship 'Persian' with his parents, and siblings, Sarah, Alice?, John, Charles and Mary in December 1852. His father David was a labourer.[3]
He married Sarah Black in 1856 in Bombala, New South Wales, Australia.[4]
Robert and Sarah had four daughters and one son.

Bolitho, G. A. Wheeler, T. H. Harwood, of Bendigo: Mrs. T. E. Watson and Mr. C. D. Hook, Northcote, aged 74 years. Interred Bendigo Cemetery 13th May.[5]

He is buried in the Bendigo cemetery - Mon M5, grave 18866. Date of service May 13, 1905[8]
