Biography

Spring 1879 the Hooker farm was struck with Scarlet Fever. They were put under quarantine. Three children succumbed to the disease and because of the quarantine Demetrius had to build the little coffins himself and bury them on the farm. The Donation Land Claim was lost in 1886 due to a mortgage note called for $3500. The Hookers left Polk County and moved to Wolf Creek in Yamhill County, where they homesteaded. Near Wolf Creek was Panther Creek. In 1894 Demetrius established the Panther Post Office in a corner of their home. (From the book " A Man is a Man : A Hooker Family Saga" by M. Overholser)
