Biography

Israel Scott Hooker was most likely born December 16, 1758 in Deerfield, Massachusetts to John Hooker.[1]

Israel was pensioned as serving as a private in Colonel James Read's Jacob Hind & Co. New Hampshire regiment for one year, beginning December 1775.[2][3][4][5] Israel is listed on a pay roll of Captain Josiah Boyden's Company in Colonel William William's Regiment of Militia in Athens, in the service of the US, on an expedition to Bennington in 1777. He entered service September 24, discharged Oct 21.

Israel married Mary Constance Moore. Their children included Israel Hooker (Jr.), Ira Allen Hooker, Mrs. E Clark. His pension claim lists six heirs, and census data indicates the possibility of four sons and three daughters.[5][6][7]

In 1790 and 1800, Israel was living in Athens, Windham, Vermont with his young family, which included two sons and three daughters, as well as his wife Mary.[6][7]

In 1820, Israel was living in Cicero, Onondaga, New York. In the household were one male over 45, one female over 45, and one male between 16 and 25.[8]

At the time of the 1840 US Census, Israel was living in Lysander, Onondaga, New York. He is listed as a veteran and his estimated birth year is 1758. In the home were Israel (white male between 80 and 90 years old) and most likely his wife, Mary (white female between 80 and 90 years old).[9][10]

Israel died 6 July 1846.[5]

Letter from Israel to Ira

Here follows a transcription of a letter written from Israel Scott Hooker to his son Ira in Illinois; it is written in a clear, firm hand:

Baldwinsville, September 1st 1839

My dear son,
I received your kind letter bearing date August [4?]th on the 20th inst. and for the reception thereof I tender you my sincere and hearty thanks. My health continues about as usual but your mother seems to be failing very fast. It becomes my painful duty to inform you of the death of your brother Octavious, who departed this life March 28, 1839--in the 42 year of his age. He has left a wife and seven children (all boys) to mourn his loss. He died in the triumph of his faith, and his beautiful spirit is now without doubt partaking in the full fruition of those joys upon which it was his chief pleasure to dwell, while he remained as a "sojourner here below". His family still keep together and will I presume continue so as long as they possibly can. Your mother has got a cancer on her arm which causes her a deal of pain and distress, and it is greatly to be feared will ultimately cause her death. I have not heard anything of your brother Israel since his somewhat mysterious disappearance from Waterloo, Ontario Co.. It is impossible for me to say what has become of him, and I am waiting with extreme anxiety some tidings of him, but from what sources to look for this news I know not.
I still reside with [Wm.?] Clark, his health is very poor and I think he is threatened with the consumption. He may however recover which I think probable. I think I wrote to you last Febry. that Anna's oldest son Hiram was confined in prison in [illegible], he will continue there, and I do not much think he will ever be permitted to see his family or friends again. Respecting crops I would inform you that our wheat crop has come in plentifully, and that our other productions of our soil bid fair to amply remunerate the farmer for all his toils. Corn is somewhat late and it is feared will be injured by the frosts. If the weather holds good a fortnight longer however we shall have first rate crops of corn. You inform me in your letter that you have embraced Christianity -- will you have the goodness to inform ? your next to which of the various Christian creeds you gave the preference?
Affectionately Yours,
Israel S. Hooker

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Israel by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Israel:
