Biography

William Hooks was born about 1608. William was transported by Captain Adam Thorowgood to Virginia aboard the French ship in 1629.[1] This ship is not named simply referred to as the French ship. The passengers were English however. Also it is important to know that the headright system was set up for anyone to receive 50 acres of land for themselves or anyone they paid passage for. There was no system to check lists from one place to another, and it seems almost everyone who could, gamed the system to obtain more land. Many people were listed multiple times as transportees.

Thorowgood received over 5000 acres of land in Lynnhaven Parish of Lower Norfolk County. A list of these transportees can be seen at William Fletcher.[2]
