Biography

Noel was born in 1895. He is the son of Albert Hookway and Annie Shaw. He enlisted in the AIF on 27 September 1915. He was shipped out to France where he sustained bomb wounds to his face and scalp in November 1915. After convalescence he was dispatched back to the front where he was wounded again behind the ear in June 1916. After recuperation in England he was sent back to France in April 1917, promoted to captain. He was soon back in hospital with various diseases. He spent the rest of the war there. He returned to Australia in October 1919.

There is some doubt about the identification: his birth registry entry gives his second name initial as T and his death certificate says his mother was Elizabeth. But there aren't any other Noel Hookways born in 1895 to Albert Hookway. So these are likely mistakes.
