Biography

James Hooley was born in 1751. He was the son of Thomas and Anne [nee Leadbeater]

In 1765 was apprenticed to Jonathan Wylde of Nottingham, FWK, for the sum of £16-16-00. And six years later, in January 1771, he married Mary Cutler by Licence, at St Peter's, Nottingham. He was enrolled as a Burgess of Nottingham in 1773.

Additional to his qualification as a FWK, James developed his trade to the point of being an established Hosier and Lace Manufacturer. To quote from a book entitled A History of the Machine-Wrought Hosiery and Lace Manufacturers by a Mr William Felkin :- " chapter on "Modifications of the Hosiery-Machine" [page 110]:- "Mr Hooley of Nottingham infringed upon this patent. When legal proceedings were threatened, he removed to Scotland and there established a rival manufacture"

And later [page 218] "Joseph Hooley, hosier for forty-three years (1813) in Nottingham, had dealt in Morris's patent lace and every other braid made in Nottingham, and had frequent calls by inventors with improvements. He had never heard of machine bobbin net till he saw Heathcoat's, and was at once struck with its excellence. About two years after Heathcoat's patent, Nunn called on him and showed him some new lace; he at once saw that it was an infringement and told him so.”

James married Mary Cutler, by licence, in January 1771 [when he was still an apprentice].

In 1799, Captain James Hooley was promoted to Major of the Nottingham Volunteers.

In the 1815 Nottingham Directory he was listed as an Acting Deputy Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire and according to the Poll Book and Electoral Register he was living at Woodthorpe, Nottinghamshire.

On the Watching and Warding List for the Monthall Ward in the Town of Nottingham dated 31 October 1816—occupation Hosier, residence High Pavement.

Burke's Landed Gentry states that James died after the death of his son Samuel Cutler Hooley. However, death notices did appear in the Nottingham Review and the Stamford Mercury newspapers stating that James Hooley, Esq., died 1st March 1830.
