Biography

Edgar, son of Gideon and Sarah Anne [nee Thorpe] Hooley, was born in 1876 in Draycott, Derbyshire. Edgar was baptised on 15 October 1876 in Derbyshire, England.[1]

As a schoolboy at the village school in Draycott, and presumably aged about 11, was caned by the head teacher for a misdemeanour. Claiming to be completely innocent, and righteously indignant at the injustice, he stormed out, crossed the fields to the neighbouring village of Risley, and sought admittance to the grammar school there. Three leather-bound prizes remain as evidence of his success.

In the 1901 census Edgar was in Church Wilne, Derbyshire, England.[2]

Name Relation Status Sex Age Occupation Birth Place

Sarah A Hooley Wife Married F 53 Draycott, Derbyshire
Gertrude Hooley Daughter Single F 30 Draycott, Derbyshire
Edgar Hooley Son Single M 25 RAILWAY CLERK Draycott, Derbyshire

He was employed as a clerk in the LMS railway offices in Derby, became a Liberal, politically, and was nearly sacked on account of his Trades Union involvement. As seems to have been not unusual, he attended both the local Methodist Chapel in Draycott, and the Parish Church down the lane in Wilne. He owned, and played, a harmonium, sang, and dabbled in watercolour. The accompanying photograph shows him reading a book.

Edgar married Mary Eunice Platts on 24 June 1901 in Little Wilne, Derbyshire, England.[3]

In the 1939 register Edgar was at 111, Shardlow, Derbyshire, England.[4]

He died while staying with his married daughter in Chester, in 1943 Edgar's death was registered in the Oct-Nov-Dec quarter of 1943 in the Chester district.[5]
