According to one rumor, Susan had illegitimate children with Stephen William Huff |Huff-1406

Excerpts from "Gossip, 2+2, and the Stephens Family:" Here's where the Gossip comes in. Just as with Clemmons Hooper's wife Barbara London, very little information has been available regarding the father of Susan Hooper's children. One story goes that Susan was employed in the home of Stephen Huff, and that he fathered her children. When the third child became evident, Mrs. Huff was infuriated and threatened poor Susan. The suggested result was that Susan left TN and moved to NC with her illegitimate children. To hide her dishonor, Susan then switched around the father’s name from Stephen Huff to Huff Stephens, bestowing the surname Stephens on all her children.^[1]

In the same article" The 1850 census (the first one to name every individual in a household) shows Clemmons, at the age of 80, living all by himself and listed immediately after the household of his nephew William Hooper. After Clemmons Hooper is:

This same Susan Stephens appears in 1830 Cocke County, Tennessee just five households away from Clemmon Hooper.(4) Susan is one of the four known children of Clemmons Hooper who, like their father, moved from Tennessee back to Haywood/Jackson County, North Carolina before 1850. In 1860, an old woman joins the Stephens home:

B. Stephens ... could that be Barbara Stephens? and could Barbara Stephens really be Barbara London Hooper, maternal grandmother of Reuben Stephens and his sister Milly? If so, maybe Reuben Stephens identified his household members. "Well, let's see, there's me, there's my grandmother, my mother, and my sister all living here." And then the enumerator just thought everyone had the same surname. Or maybe, after Clemmons Hooper died, his widow (inexplicably missing from the 1850 census) remarried someone named Stephens and again was widowed. Could either hypothesis work? Have we found Barbara London Hooper?
