Biography

1871 Christening

Richard Hooper, son of Richard Hooper and Martha, was born on 16 Mar 1870 and was baptised at Mevagissey[†], Cornwall, England on the 29th of October, 1871.[1]
† The ODM above record appears to be incorrect as the 1871 census gives his place of birth as Pentewan, St Austell, Cornwall, England. This is followed up as St Austell in the 1881 census. (See below) however it could just be that the baptism was at Mevagissey.

† The Umhlali was a new ship built in 1904 when Richard travelled on it in 1905 and it was subsequently wrecked off The Cape in 1909.

Research Note

There is an additional record that says the marriage was 3rd June, 1900.[8] Both are extracted records but the correct date is taken to be the 27th as that matches the parish registers..
