Walter was born on 19th January 1922 at 8 Bloomsbury Road in Ramsgate, Kent.[1] He was the son of Walter Hooper and his wife Dorothy King. He can be found on the birth index as Walter A J Hooper, January quarter of 1922 at Thanet, Kent, volume 2a page 1935.[2]
As there was a lot of Walter`s in the house he was brought up in, his grandmother said right you can be called John. This stuck and he was known as John all his life.
Dad trained as a Builder before the war and worked for several building firms. When the war came along he did his serve. I remember him telling me that while fighting in the war, His unit was trapped on a hill, and he tried to help his colleague. Putting his arm out to get him to get down as they were under fire. In the process he got shot through the wrist.
After the war, Dad came home to Ramsgate, returning to both the building trade and his childhood sweetheart, Barbara.
Mum and Dad married on 31st March 1951 at St Lukes Church, Ramsgate, Kent.[3] and can be found on the marriage index as Walter A J Hooper March quarter of 1951, district, Thanet, Kent. spouse Barbara E Vickers, volume 5b page 1840. [4]
Mum and Dad had three daughters:- Lynda Hooper Pauline Hooper and Myself Julie Hooper.
Dad injured his back while on a building site, and as Mum had started her own Florist buisiness He joined her at the Shop.
Dad loved Sailing and would often be found down the beach with his dingy, As a builder by trade he decided he would build his own boat. This took so long to do as he was working in the shop and bringing up his young family. Everyone thought it was a big boat, but Dad said no This is it, and that stuck and the boat was named This is it.
Dad was a very suportive and loving father, so when Dad was diagnosed with Alzimers in 2008 and I went back to live with my parents to help mum look after dad. Sadly Dad passed away on 31st March 2010, with all his family around him, at the Pilgrim`s Hospice, Margate, Kent.[5]
