Joseph Hooper was born circa 1806. Castle Cary is given as his birthplace in 1851 and '61, though he claimed Merriott in following censuses. If truly born in Merriott, he was very likely the Joseph baptised on 21 Jun 1807, All Saints' Church, to Charles and Elizabeth Hooper.
He married Ann Trask, daughter of Joseph and Catherine Pattemore Trask, at All Saints' Church, 28 Dec 1828.
He was in 1851 a coal carrier of Merriottsford. He was then recorded in all successive censuses as a market gardener of Pye Corner.
He was living on Broadway when he died on 12 Dec 1899, laid to rest four days later at presumably the parish churchyard.
