Biography

Garnett Wolsley Hooper was born in 1888 in Cornwall, England.[1] He was baptised 25 April 1889 at St. Dennis, Cornwall, England[2] At the time of the 1891 census and the 1911 census, he was living with his father, Robert Hooper, at St Stephens in Brannel, Cornwall, England.[3] [4]

When Garnett was not quite 24 years of age, he sailed from Southampton on board the RMS Olympic on 29 August 1912 and arrived at Ellis Island, New York on 5 September 1912.[5] He became a naturalised citizen of the United States on 17 February 1919. He married Elizabeth Maud Grigg on 22 August 1914 in Wakefield, Gogebic, Michigan,[6] and the couple raised three children:

Robert Charles Hooper[7][8]
Eunice Mary Hooper[9][10]
Sybil Hooper[11]

On 23 August 1920, Garnett applied for a passport so he, his wife, and his two children could travel to Cornwall to visit his mother, who was ill. The passport describes him as 5'7" tall with a dark complexion, dark brown hair, blue eyes, and a high forehead.[12] The passport record includes a photo or Garnett, and a photo of his wife with their two young children.

Garnett worked as a miner in 1920,[13] as a brakeman for the railroad in 1930,[14] and as a farmer in 1940.[15] It appears that he lived in Wakefield, Gogebic, Michigan from at least 1913 to 1940.[16][17][18][19][20]
