Elizabeth (Hooper) Stile was born in Somerset, England.
Elizabeth Hooper born in Frome, Somersetshire, to her father George Hooper.[1] She was likely born sometime before 1662, assuming she was at least 18 years old when she gave birth to her first child.
She married Joseph Mayo, from the nearby Poulshot, Wiltshire, sometime before 1682, when they baptized their first child Elizabeth Mayo[2]. She appears to have relocated to Poulshott and lived with him during his lifetime. They had four known children together, all of whom were baptized in Poulshott:
Her husband Joseph passed away in November 1691, and was buried on the 10 November in Poulshot.[10]
He died intestate, and an inventory of his will was taken a day later (11 November 1691). Later that month, Elizabeth relinquished her right to administer her late husband's estate to her father-in-law William Mayo[11]
At the time of her husbands death, Elizabeth was pregnant with their last child, a son who would be named Joseph. According to his baptism record, he was born in 1692, after his father's death, in Elizabeth's hometown of Frome. Interestingly, he wouldn't be baptized until 1703, having since returned to Poulshot.[8]
Marriage to Mr. Stile
She was named in her father's will, written 13 July 1698, where she was referred to as "Elizabeth May." She, along with her sisters, was bequeathed £5. He bequeathed the same to each of her children as well.[1]
Sometime thereafter she married a man by the last name of Stile (possibly Richard). She is named accordingly in the 1729 will of her sister, Joane Grant, who bequeaths some property to her children:
”to my sister Elizabeth Stile for life for her sole and separate use; and after her death the principal to her sons William Mayo and Joseph Mayo share and share alike… to William Mayo and Joseph Mayo £50 apiece… to my niece Mary d/o Elizabeth Stile £100 with one pair of silver salts and my least set of china dishes and saucers for her sole separate use and disposal.”[12][13]
Death
Elizabeth died sometime after being named in her sister's will. The most common death date given for her in online trees is May 1740, buried on the 23rd. While this claim often goes unsourced, this would correspond to a burial record in her hometown of Frome, which reads:
If this record is, in fact, her, it would indicate that she returned to her hometown sometime after her husbands death, and that her husbands name was Richard Stile.
