William Buell Hoops was born on November 10, 1890 in Clearwater, Wayne, Missouri.[1][2] His parents were Alvis Hoops and Margaret Bennett. William attended school through the eighth grade. Following the death of his father in 1902, Margaret remarried and moved the family to Carter, Missouri. As a young man, William worked for his step-father as a farm laborer[3]. Later in life, he worked as a street car conductor, and a laborer for the WPA[4][2]
William married Mary "Katie" Wakefield in 1915. Together they had two children: Beulah Madeline Hoops and Margaret Lucille Hoops. Katie died just a month after their second child was born in 1918. He married Laura Goggin on August 14, 1920 in St. Louis, Missouri.[5] Together they had two children: George Elbert Hoops and Evelyn L Hoops. The pair divorced sometime prior to 1940, and he returned to live with his now widowed mother.[6] At the age of 51, he married for a third time. He married Nellie Sullivan on September 12, 1942 in St. Louis, Missouri.[7]
William died on May 15, 1963 in St. Louis, Missouri.[8] His cause of death is listed as meningitis. He was 72 years old. He is buried in Memorial Park Cemetery in Jennings, St. Louis County, Missouri.[9]
