Biography

Cintha was born on 2 April 1820 in Rush county, Indiana. She was the daughter of Jacob Hooton and Unknown (UNKNOWN) Hooton. Note: On the 1900 census Cynthia's son David said his mother was born in New York but on the 1850 and 1860 censuses, Cynthia said she was born in Indiana.[1]

When Cintha was 30 she married Israel Barker on 16 March 1851 in St Joseph county, Indiana, USA. The couple had 2 children: David Franklin Barker and Walter S. Barker.[2]

Research Notes

Note: MARRIAGE: in her pension applications Cintha said she was married in LaPorte county, Indiana, but the certified marriage record says she was married in St Joseph county, Indiana.
Cintha's Connection to Jacob Hooton (by Ron K Taylor): My grandfather, Paul Alfonte Taylor, was a family historian, and kept a journal, all typed out on notebook paper, of the family genealogy. That book whetted my interest in continuing the ancestry, after he died in 1945. There I found a note that Cynthia Hooton was a cousin of Jacob Hooton (1830-1899), my 1st cousin, 5 times removed, who married my 3rd great aunt, Emily Jane Taylor. That Jacob was the grandson of Thomas Hooton, mentioned above. So, if he and Cynthia were cousins (presumably first), who could have been her father? It would have had to be one of Thomas' sons, right? (First cousins are sons/daughters of your parents' brothers/sisters) So, I went to work studying those male sons of Thomas and Susannah Green. Thomas had another wife, Orender Bush, a later marriage, but their children were mostly too young to have had Cynthia. Most all of Thomas and Susanna's grandchildren were identified, so most were eliminated in the process. Some had relocated to other states, eliminating them. To make a long story short, Cyntha's father had to have been Jacob Hooton (1795-1879), and he had at least two unnamed children. Jacob left Kentucky at least by 1819, was in Dearborn County, Indiana in the 1820 census, and then to Rush County, Indiana, as you know. The 1850 census cinched it for me, as Cyntha "Slain" and her children are living with Jacob and Martha Hooton, in Rush County. And why?? Well, William Harrison Slane had left her and their children. Where else for them to go?.... to Momma and Daddy's home, of course!! (except that Martha was Jacob's 2nd wife, and not Cyntha's mother; her mother, Martha, died in 1839)

1820 Census, Dearborn county, Indiana.
Jacob Hooton has a daughter (unnamed) under the age of 10.
1840 Census, Cynthia Hooton appears in the 1840 census in Decatur county, Indiana with her husband W. H. Slane. The family moved to Boone county, Indiana in 1844 (source: Rush county probate records for her father-in-law William T Slane/Sledd). The father-in-law's land was ordered to be sold in 1846 to pay debts of the estate. In 1849, husband W. H. Slane abandoned Cynthia and their five children and went to Louisiana.
!BIRTH: 1900 Census shows her son, David, stating that his mother was born in New York. 1850 and 1860 censuses show Cynthia reporting her birthplace as Indiana.
NAME: Her name is sometimes spelled Cyntha; sometimes Cintha; sometimes Cinthia; sometimes Cynthea. Which is right? Cintha is the way it is spelled on the family's Barker Scroll. Cynthea is the way it is spelled on her marriage record in Indiana. Cynthia is on her application for Israel's mililtary pension.
MARRIAGE: Marriage date for marriage to William Harrison Slane found in "IN Marriages Through 1850" available on the Internet through the Indiana State Library Genealogy Division. (Thanks, Ruth Feltz!)
1860 Census, LaPorte county, Indiana
Israel Barker and his wife, Cyntha, are listed on the 1860 LaPorte county, Indiana census and had five Slane/Slone children living with them, along with Israel's children from his first marriage, and their own child, David F. Barker (age 2). There were eight children between the ages of 12 and 19. Israel had $1,600 worth of real estate and $180 worth of personal property at that time. The Slane/Slone children were:
Mary E. age 19
Nelson age 17
William T. age 16
Martha E. age 14
Jacob A. age 12
Cyntha had been married before and these Slane/Slone children were her own

This information is from our family records:
Cinthia and her two sons moved to Missouri before 1879 (after her husband Israel Barker died from injuries incurred in the Civil War).
Email from Ron Taylor 12 April 2010: "According to my research, and conclusions, Cynthia Hooton has to be the daughter of Jacob Hooton (1795-1879) and Martha, surname unknown (Jacob's first wife, who died in 1839). Cynthia is recorded in some trees as born 1837 in New York, which cannot be true, as she married William H. Slane in 1839. My conclusion is that she was the female child, under age nine, of Jacob Hooton recorded in the 1820 census in Dearborn County, Indiana."

Cyntha's son David Franklin Barker was in Harrison county, Missouri at the time of the 1880 census. Cyntha's husband John Merrifield died in 1896 in Kansas. Later David Franklin Barker went to Nebraska. Cyntha's son Walter Barker probably went to Nebraska, also. Cintha may have gone as well.
The military pension files for Israel Barker, filed by Cintha Merrifield and John Merrifield, on behalf of Israel's living children David F Barker and Walter S Barker, show that John and Cynthia Merrifield were living in Bethany, Harrison county, Missouri 1877 and later in Hastings county, Nebraska in 1885.
Cynthia and John Merrifield filed for pension benefits for Israel's children for over nineteen years.
