  • 29 Jan 1863 John landed at Canterbury, New Zealand having travelled on the ship Chariot of Fame. The ship left England on 21 Oct 1862. He travelled with his wife Emma Hope; daughter Ann Hope; stepson William Corbett; and stepdaughter Elizabeth Corbett. On the passenger list he was recorded as being aged 28 and as coming from Shropshire with an occupation of Labourer.[7]

Research Notes

Although the John Hope that married Elizabeth Corbett was recorded as having a father named George Hope on the marriage certificate I believe the John Hope marrying Emma was the son of Ann Hope of Sabden, Lancashire and that he added a father’s name to cover up the fact that he was illegitimate. I have done an extensive review of the 1851 UK Census records on the websites https://www.findmypast.co.uk and https://www.familysearch.org and found no other John Hope born in Lancashire around 1835 who had the occupation of stonemason (or similar). Both websites were reviewed for records of a John Hope who was the son of George Hope born in Lancashire around 1835. Only one was identified; he was baptized 24 Mar 1834 at Collegiate Church, Manchester [8] and died and was buried 22 Apr 1852 at St Mary the Virgin, Prestwich, Lancashire, England [9] and therefore he was not the John Hope who married Emma Corbett in 1861.[10]
Although marked as widower on the marriage record with Emma, no previous marriages have been identified for John.[11]
