Biography

Lucy Ellen was born on 3 September 1880^[1]. She is the fourth daughter and tenth child of James Hope and Emily Collard. At the time of her birth her family was living in Weston-super-Mare (WSM) (Axbridge Registration District, Somerset.) This was her mother's home town. Her birth was registered in the fourth quarter of 1880.^[2]

Her baptism took place on 17 October 1880 at Christchurch, WSM. The family lived at 4 Great George Street. ^[3]

As a baby of a few months she appears in the 1881 census at 85 George Street, WSM ^[4], in the 1891 census, when she is aged 10, they are living at 16 Glebe Road, WSM. ^[5]

At the time of the 1901 census (aged 20) she is still living with the family, at 3 Craigton Road, Eltham, London. ^[6] This was an area that her older brother William Henry, a stone mason like their father, and father to Leslie Townes Hope (1903-2003) (Bob Hope, the 20th century entertainer) moved to in about 1902.

Later, According to the 1939 Register, her married name is Symons, she is a widow, and she is living with four children and her 96 year old father in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.^[7]
