Biography
James was born about 1839 [1] possibly in the United States[2] or Canada[3]
According to son Richard's birth certificate [4] James married Maria Tarry on 25 August 1868. To date no record of their marriage has been found at NZBDM.
They are thought to have had at least four children before Maria's death in 1884.[5]
They were:
Emily Wallace (Hopkins) Neame (c1866/7-1937)
William James Hopkins (c1870-1935)
Edward Charles Hopkins (1873-1940)
Richard John Hopkins (1879-1926)
James passed away in 1907 aged 68 [6] and is buried in Orowaiti Middle Cemetery, Westport.[7]
Research Notes
James' death certificate does not name his parents.
Canada seems the more likely birth country as it's fair to assume that James knew what country he was born in.
