  • 1891 Census: Arthur (6, born in Birstall) is living on the Howdenclough Leeds Road in Birstall, Gomersal, Spen Valley, Yorkshire with his father Harry Hopkinson (28, born in Bradford, an engine tinter in Woolen Mill), his mother Sarah A (29, born in Halifax) and 1 sibling: Emma (1, born in Birstall).
  • 1901 Census: Arthur (16, born in Birstall, a boot buffer in shoe factory) is living at 6 Compton Row, Leeds - Potter Newton, Yorkshire with his father Harry Hopkinson (37, born in Bradford, an engine tinter), his mother Sarah A (39, born in Halifax) and 3 siblings: Emma (11, born in Birstall), Harry (6, born in Birstall) and Emily (2, born in Birstall)

Also on the record is Hannah Hopkinson, Arthur’s grandmother (78, a widow, born in Rastrick).
  • WWI Military Service: Fought in the Great War in the same regiment as his brother Harry (LeedsPals) but in a different Battalion. As Arthur was on his way to the front line, Harry would be returning and vice versa. The one on his way out would always have a parcel of clean underwear etc for his brother. Arthur was wounded in action, he did return home.

**** NLH Note: In the 1902 Census there is a 16 year old Arthur Hopkinson, Coal Hurrier, living as boarder in Liversedge - unknown birth place. After some research, this is very likely the Arthur Hopkinson that marries a Lena Beanland in Dewsbury 4Q 1916 and lived in Liversedge in 1939 (working as a nightwatchman). Death is likely 2Q 1956 in Spen Valley. Therefore not a match for our Arthur.

  • 4Q 1933 Death: Arthur Hopkinson (48) death is registered in Leeds North Registrar 4Q 1933. From family input; Arthur never married and died not long after he returned from WWI.
