DennisN74 (View posts) Posted: 16 Feb 2001 02:37PM Edited: 28 Jun 2005 06:04PM Velma,

Sorry I can't help you on Vaney. I know very little about the Hoppers other than I do know their were several intermarriages with the Neals/Neils, but none in my line that I know of. As far as being Cherokee, it is possible. I know there was an Ash Hopper in NW GA ca 1833-35. He mvd northe to Hamilton County, TN and didn't move west (he was on the early Rolls). I always thought there was a connection with him to Charles Hopper in Williamson (or Maury?) County, TN. Charles was f/o Archibald Hopper who was in Polk County, MO ca 1835-50. Some of his ancestors think he was of Cherokee descent as I do. Hope this helps you in your research... ---Dennis

Vaney Syloand (View posts) Posted: 17 Feb 2001 03:57AM Edited: 13 Jun 2002 03:54PM thanks Dennis - Charles and Martha Hopper had a daughter named Sylvania (Vaney)sister of Archibald. We think this is our Vaney Hopper but cannot prove she is the one who married John Turner. We know that Sylvania Turner Neal daughter of John Turner and Vaney Hopper was Cherokee she was my gggrandmother. Can't prove that Charles Hopper was Cherokee. Thanks for your reply. Velma

HOPPERS-TURNERS-NEILS (aka NEALS) DennisN74 (View posts) Posted: 19 Feb 2001 01:21AM Edited: 28 Jun 2005 06:04PM Velma, Osiyo, Thanks for the info. It doesn't surprise me that Archibald HOPPER fits in with this group of HOPPERS and NEILS. The NEILS, like many families then and now, used shortened versions of given names so "Vaney" could very well be derived from Sylvania, who was sis/o Archibald. The NEILS (aka NEILS) as you know intermarried with the TURNERS so we have Turner NEIL related to this line (as I am sure you have probably already come across). The TURNERS may have been Cherokee. The NEILS had a real habit of marrying into the Cherokee, in fact, I am a 1/4 blood myself. The HOPPERS were close neighbors to my NEILS in both TN and MO. My great grandfather, Samuel B. NEIL, signed the marriage ceremony certificate for George Washington NEIL who m Malissa Elizabeth HOPPER in POLK County, MO dated 24 March, 1875. Seems to me they moved either to OK or OR??? If I remember correctly, Archibald HOPPER lived in or near Humansville, named after James G. HUMAN who was half-Cherokee but he told everyone that he was Black Dutch. I think Archibald and he came there about the same time from TN, as well. Just 3-4 years ago someone "let the cat out of the bag" and told all that he was really Cherokee which surprised many about who the "real founder" of their town was. My Chief, in fact, let a Prayer March through the town in his memory at that time. I've also ran into other HOPPER researchers in Polk County, MO who may be able to help you as they think the HOPPERS were of Cherokee descent, as well. I would post a query on their local generalogy page (if you haven't already done so) as I cannot recall others who I've visited with in the past on them... Wa-do, Dennis M."High Eagle" Neil

Re: Vaney Katherine Smith (View posts) Posted: 05 Jun 2002 06:37PM Classification: Query I am also trying to prove Sylvania Turner Neal (b. Jan 1 1827) was Cherokee. If anyone has information on her parents, John Turner and Vaney Hopper Turner I would greatly appreciate being contacted. Thanks!

Re: HOPPERS-TURNERS-NEILS (aka NEALS) myboyzforever (View posts) Posted: 23 Nov 2008 09:59PM Classification: Query i am a decendent of Dr.Alfred Neal son of James Milton and Vaney Tune Neal....By all acounts she was cherokee any help with this would be a blessing.

Re: HOPPERS-TURNERS-NEILS (aka NEALS) Syloand (View posts) Posted: 24 Nov 2008 11:54PM Classification: Query Sylvania Turner Neal was my gggrandmother and my grandmother told me about her Indian grandmother and she was Cherokee. She was the daughter of John Turner and a Vany Hopper m 1806. The Cherokee has to be one of them but cannot trace John Turner and there are two possible Vany's. Most have her the daughter of a Charles and Martha Hopper but only possibility there is Martha (noone has ever found her last name). The others have her the daughter of a Harmon Hopper - but I cannot find that he had a daughter named Vany. On the 1850 cencus the Turners, the Neals and a Harmon Hopper all live next to each other - both Vany Turner and Sylvnaia Turner Neal use the name Syloand for some reason. Can send more details dates ect. Velma
